Kickers Legend Departs; Joins GMU Women's Program

Director of Technical Development and Camps, Owusu Sekyere has agreed to join George Mason Women’s Soccer program as their new assistant coach. During the past 17 years the Kickers legend has left an indelible mark on the Richmond soccer community making a significant impact at the Youth, Collegiate and Pro levels.

“I would like to thank Leigh and the staff for the opportunity to play and coach for the Kickers organization over the past 8 years. Sekyere said. “I have learned so much from them as a player, coach and person. Thank you to all the parents and players that I have coached. I hope I made a positive impact on their lives both on and off the field.”

Seykere has been involved with the Richmond Kickers since joining the pro team for the 2015 season. The Kumasi, Ghana native made 96 appearances, scoring nine goals and added 12 assists over four seasons. A standout at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2006-2009, the midfielder previously made 28 appearances with the Charlotte Eagles in 2014. He has recently served two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach for VCU Women's Soccer.

Holding a USSF “B” license, Sekyere originally joined the Kickers Youth Club in 2015 and quickly progressed to Assistant Program Director. He was recently promoted to his current role as Director of Technical Development and Camps in 2020. He was singularly responsible for establishing and developing the youth cub’s technical training program and has coached teams and players across all of their programs.

 “We are incredibly grateful for Owusu’s role in building our club.” Leigh Cowlishaw, Executive Director said. “His energy and passion for the sport is infectious and he has made a significant impact on so many youth players lives. As well as being an exceptional youth coach, he established our technical training program and has strengthened our camp program adding new staff and curriculum. We wish him all the best in his next chapter and thank him wholeheartedly for his loyal service to the Kickers. He will be missed greatly.”

Sekyere now begins the next stage of his career joining GMU Women’s soccer program as an Assistant Coach under the guidance of Head Coach, Manya Puppione.  Sekyere added, “As I begin my new role in the college soccer environment, I will use much of the knowledge gained through my youth coaching experience and look forward to continuing to support the Kickers.”
